Once the immediate concerns after a car accident are handled, the next question is often: What happens to my car now?
Collision repair involves more than fixing the damage you can see. The process can include an estimate, communication with the insurance company, disassembly, additional damage documentation, body or structural repairs, refinishing, quality checks, and a final review with you before the vehicle goes home.
At Kuroda Autobody, we follow a seven-step repair process. While the work required will be different for every vehicle, knowing what happens at each stage can make the experience easier to understand.
1. Schedule Your Estimate
The repair process begins with an inspection of your vehicle. We assess the visible accident damage and determine what repairs appear to be needed.
You do not automatically need multiple estimates. Unless your insurer specifically requires them, one estimate may be enough to begin the repair process.
If you plan to use insurance, your insurance company provides the claim number. Having that information available when you schedule your estimate can help with the next steps.
Estimates at our Waipahu location are by appointment. For more answers about estimates, insurance claims, deductibles, and rental vehicles, see our collision repair FAQs.
2. Insurance Coordination
If your repair involves an insurance claim, we work with the insurer on the estimate, required approvals, and supplements for accident damage discovered during the repair.
The first estimate is based on what can be assessed at that point. It may not show every damaged component.
Once repairs begin and parts are removed, additional accident damage can sometimes become visible. When that happens, the additional work is documented and handled through a supplement with the insurer.
Your insurer also confirms your deductible and the details of your coverage. The repair shop does not determine what your policy covers, so questions about your deductible, rental benefits, or other policy terms should be confirmed with your insurance company.
3. Drop Off Your Vehicle and Arrange Transportation
Once the repair is scheduled, you bring the vehicle in so the work can begin.
If you need a rental vehicle, on-site rental pickup is available. Whether insurance pays for the rental depends on your policy. Check with your insurer to confirm whether you have rental coverage and what limits apply. If rental coverage is not included, you can choose to rent a vehicle at your own expense.
Before dropping off your vehicle, remove personal belongings you may need while it is in the shop.
From there, the vehicle moves into the repair stage.
4. Repair and Updates
The work required depends on the type and extent of the collision damage. Repairs may involve dents, fenders, doors, body panels, bumpers, structural work, welding, refinishing, diagnostic scanning, or a combination of services.
When structural damage is involved, we use Car-O-Liner 3D electronic measuring to identify structural damage and restore the vehicle to proper specifications.
For refinishing, we use a Sikkens system with digital color matching and careful blending.
Some parts of a collision repair may require coordination with other qualified providers. ADAS calibration is coordinated either on site with qualified specialists or through the vehicle manufacturer's dealership, depending on the vehicle. Auto glass can also be coordinated when it is part of the overall collision repair.
Throughout the repair, we keep you informed about progress and expected completion.
Why the Repair Timeline Can Change
There is no standard repair time that applies to every vehicle.
Several factors can affect the schedule:
- The type and extent of the collision damage
- Additional damage discovered after disassembly
- Insurance approvals and supplements
- Parts and vehicle-specific repair requirements
- Work that needs to be coordinated with another qualified provider
A change in the repair plan does not necessarily mean something was overlooked during the original estimate. Some accident damage cannot be fully seen until damaged parts are removed.
That is also why a responsible repair timeline may change as more information becomes available.
5. Final Quality Check
Finishing the repair work is not the same as being ready to hand the vehicle back to you.
Once repairs are complete, we perform a final quality check. The completed work is inspected for quality, fit, and finish before the vehicle moves to pickup.
This gives the repair a separate review before the handoff to the customer.
6. Post-Repair Walkthrough
At pickup, we walk through the vehicle with you, review the completed work, and answer your questions.
Our handoff includes an annotated hard-copy work order along with before-and-after photos that are reviewed with the customer.
This helps you see what work was completed and gives you an opportunity to look over the vehicle before leaving.
If anything on the repair order is unclear, ask about it during the walkthrough. You should know what was repaired and have the opportunity to discuss the completed work before you get back on the road.
7. Back on the Road With Warranty Protection
The final step is returning the vehicle to you and reviewing the warranty that applies to the repair.
Qualifying metalwork and refinishing repairs include a Limited Lifetime Warranty for as long as you own the vehicle. Other repairs and parts may have their own warranty terms.
Before leaving, make sure you understand which warranty terms apply to your specific repair and who to contact if you have a question later.
